Product guide

Lumemark User Manual

Read what matters for your goal without giving up the source. This guide explains how to create a focused result from long materials, read it in the Flow view, inspect complete context in the Source view, and use AI assistance alongside the text.

Quick start

Set a goal, focus your reading across selected sources, and verify the result in context.

Use AI to focus your reading around what you are trying to understand or accomplish without replacing the source material. After you set a Focus and choose resources, AI finds and organizes the relevant passages. Read the focused result in the Flow view, then move to the Source view whenever you need the complete source and its original context.

Use this sequence to create your first focused result, called a Flow.

  1. On Projects, create a project and open it.
  2. Open Dashboard and open the resource source menu, which initially reads Choose…. Select Choose local file or Add from URL, provide the source, then press the upward-arrow button. You can also select Add from projects to reuse an existing resource.
  3. Select the resources the run should use.
  4. Open Focus. Choose Goal for a question or outcome, or Target for a subject. Add Context when background or constraints would change what is relevant.
  5. Return to Dashboard. Choose Include to highlight useful material or Exclude to remove material that does not belong.
  6. Choose Automatic Coverage, or choose Manual and set a percentage.
  7. Press Run to process the selected resources.
  8. Use the Flow view to read the result as contextual excerpts and the Source view to read each complete source with selections in place.

After the first Run, you can edit selections, refine the Focus, continue the Thread, or ask the Assistant about the result.

Projects and Resources

Add files or web pages and choose the resources a Run should use.

A project keeps the sources, Focus, Runs, and Assistant conversation for one piece of work.

Create a project

Press New project, enter a project name, then press Create project. The project opens immediately so you can add resources and set its Focus.

Open a project

Select a project title in the projects list to open its workspace.

Change project details

Open a project's action menu and select Edit project details. For each field, choose Pinned Focus to use the pinned reminder or Custom to enter your own text.

After you pin a suggestion, the card briefly offers Review when the new reminder provides a title or description that is not already being used. Select Review to open the same choices, or select Dismiss. The prompt closes automatically after 10 seconds.

When a new suggestion appears below a pinned reminder, press the pin button beside Suggested to make it the new pinned reminder. Your existing Pinned Focus or Custom choices for the project title and description stay unchanged. Press the x button to dismiss the suggestion instead.

If a title or description uses Pinned Focus, unpinning switches it back to its stored Custom value.

Delete a project

Open the project's action menu and select Delete project. Confirming permanently deletes the project and its resources, highlights, saved states, and Assistant history.

Add resources

In Dashboard, open the resource source menu, which initially reads Choose…. Select Choose local file to upload a .txt, .pdf, .html, .htm, or .md file, or select Add from URL and enter a public web address. Then press the upward-arrow button. You can instead press Ctrl+Enter on Windows or Linux, or Command+Enter on macOS, while the resource control is active. If a file is too large, the upload message shows the current limit.

You can also drag one local file anywhere over the project workspace. Dashboard opens and shows where the resource will appear; drop the file to start uploading it. Drop one file at a time. The resource appears at the end of the list after the upload succeeds and is not selected automatically.

To reuse existing resources, open the same source menu, select Add from projects, choose resources from the list, then press Add N resources. Newly added resources are not selected automatically.

Select resources

Check each resource the next run should use. Coverage is measured across the selected resources together.

Rename a resource

Open the resource's action menu and select Rename resource. Enter the new name, then press Rename.

To return to the original name, open Rename resource again and press Restore original name.

Delete a resource

Open the resource's action menu and select Delete resource. Delete is available only while no saved Run uses the resource. To remove a referenced resource, delete the Threads that use it first.

Plans and Usage

Understand available AI usage percentages, work in progress, capacity, history, and available billing actions.

Open Usage from the account header on Projects to review your plan, available AI usage, capacity, and usage history.

Read your available AI usage

The summary shows AI usage · X% available. This is what is available now, after finished work and reservations for work in progress. 100% means the current usage budget is fully available; a small positive balance below the display precision appears as <0.1%, not zero.

When work is in progress, the information button explains reservations. Hover, focus, or tap it to read the explanation. Any unused reserved portion becomes available again when the work finishes, so the percentage can rise without new usage being added. The page refreshes while visible and work remains pending; returning to the page or pressing Retry also refreshes it.

Your 7-day Trial with limited AI usage includes one AI usage budget for the whole evaluation, not a daily allowance or a prorated Pro subscription. It does not refill each day; larger actions may use it up before the seven days end.

The Trial starts when you first open a Project workspace after accepting the current Terms, not when you sign in or visit Projects or Usage. Before then, Usage shows Not started. Once active, it shows the end date and time in your local timezone and refreshes when that deadline arrives while the page is visible.

After Trial expired, you can still read and edit existing work, rename or delete it, and request account data or deletion. Starting AI work, adding resources, or creating another Project requires renewed access. Expiry does not mean your unused usage was spent, and the Trial does not automatically charge you. During the free invite-only release, contact Support if you need more evaluation time; an extension is not automatic.

Additional Trial usage changes the current percentage reference, not the end date; past actions keep their original references. A time extension preserves remaining usage rather than refilling it. There is no customer-operated refill button. Pro shows its own reset or period-end information.

Check account capacity

Capacity compares current Projects, Resources, and source storage with the active limits. A pending amount means an upload or copy has reserved capacity but has not finished yet. A separate per-Project Resource limit appears when it applies.

Review AI usage history

Use Period to switch between Current period and Lifetime history. Use Operation to show all operations or one available type. The newest operations appear first with their Project, selected model when relevant, usage percentage, and status.

  • Pending shows — until the work finishes, not a final usage estimate.
  • Complete shows the final usage percentage.
  • Canceled shows the known usage percentage, including zero when no AI usage was incurred.

Each action's percentage uses the usage budget when it first reserved usage. Reference sizes can differ, so these percentages should not be added together as current-period usage. Adding or replenishing Trial usage does not rewrite past percentages.

For Trial, Current period includes work originally funded by that same Trial, including after a time extension. Work funded by intervening Pro access stays separate. Lifetime shows all available account history.

Select an available Project name to open it. Press Load more when older rows are available.

When an action needs more usage

Not enough AI usage available for this action means the action needs more than is currently available, not necessarily that all usage has been consumed. If the message mentions ongoing work, some usage is reserved; waiting may free some, but does not guarantee enough for this action. Your input is preserved. Retry deliberately after reviewing the situation; the action will not restart automatically.

View usage appears when the denied usage belongs to your account. An action in another owner's Project does not disclose that owner's private balance. Usage restrictions and operational availability are separate: a temporary service restriction does not mean your usage is exhausted.

If workspace access could not be confirmed, press Try again in its notice. If an action says your Trial has not started, Start Trial retries activation in the workspace; then retry your action deliberately. Neither recovery automatically runs the original action. Work already admitted before expiry may finish within its existing limits.

Use the available billing action

The page shows only billing actions currently available for the account. Upgrade or Resume Pro opens hosted Checkout. Manage billing opens the hosted billing page for the existing subscription.

Returning from a hosted billing page does not by itself confirm that a change has finished. If the plan has not updated, wait for billing confirmation and refresh Usage. During a pending or unresolved billing change, an action may be temporarily unavailable.

If the page cannot safely load the current plan and balances, press Retry. Existing summary information remains visible when only an additional history page fails to load.

Focus

Describe the question, outcome, or subject that should guide a Run.

A Focus combines a Goal or Target with optional Context.

Goal

Choose Goal when the result should help with a question or outcome. For example: “What evidence supports expanding into this market?”

Target

Choose Target when the result should stay about a subject. For example: “Battery supply-chain risks in Europe.”

In Exclude mode, Target still describes what should remain, not what should be removed.

Context

Use Context for background, constraints, audience, or other details that change what is relevant. Leave it empty when it would only repeat the Goal or Target.

Choose a Manual Coverage target that is plausible for the breadth of the Focus. A narrow Focus and a very high target may not have enough relevant material to satisfy both.

The choice between Goal and Target is fixed after a Thread has a saved Run. To switch modes, use Start New Thread Here and make the new choice before the next run.

A project focus reminder describes the broader direction of the project. The Goal or Target under Focus guides the next run.

Include and Exclude

Choose whether a Run highlights useful material or excludes material that should be removed.

Include

Choose Include to highlight material that belongs in the result. The Flow view presents those highlights as contextual excerpts, and the Source view marks them within the complete source.

Surface Labels can organize Include highlights by topic or purpose.

Exclude

Choose Exclude to mark material that should be removed. The Flow view presents the retained text as contextual excerpts, and the Source view marks the exclusions within the complete source. Coverage is the percentage excluded, not the percentage retained.

A Target still describes what should remain. For example, the Target “security implications” asks the run to exclude off-topic or repetitive material so the remaining text stays useful for that subject.

Selection mode is fixed after a Thread has a saved Run. Use Start New Thread Here to switch between Include and Exclude.

Coverage

Choose whether a Run decides the amount or aims for a percentage.

Coverage controls how much of the selected resources a run should highlight or exclude.

Automatic

Choose Automatic when relevance matters more than a particular amount. The run decides how much material fits the Focus.

Manual

Choose Manual when you need roughly a particular amount. Move the slider to set the target. Requested range shows the lower and upper percentages the run will try to stay within.

The range is a goal, not a guarantee. Focus still determines what belongs, so the result can finish above or below the range when the sources do not contain a clean selection that satisfies both.

The slider limits the target you can choose. The requested range may extend beyond the slider's ordinary limits, up to 0% or 100%.

Current coverage

When Manual Coverage is active and a saved result is open, a marker appears once the current highlighted or excluded percentage across the selected resources can be calculated. For non-incremental and Flexible runs, the marker is only a reference and does not constrain the target. In Cumulative, it marks the minimum because the current selections must remain.

When the Cumulative target reaches the current end of the slider, press the adjacent + to extend the scale. Extending the scale does not change the target.

Semantic compactness

Guide selection to reduce repetition within one resource or across all selected resources.

Semantic compactness guides selection to reduce repeated ideas and prefer stronger representations while retaining meaningful differences.

Choose the scope

  • Unified processes all selected resources together. Choose it when repeated or overlapping ideas should be compared across sources.
  • Per resource processes each resource independently. It can reduce repetition within a resource, but not between resources.

The two scopes can produce different results. Unified never switches to Per resource without your action. If the combined sources are too large, choose Per resource and start the run again.

Split an oversized resource

With Per resource, turn on Allow splitting oversized resources when one resource is too large to process as a whole. Repetition can then be compared within each part, but not across the split boundaries.

Turn compactness off

When Semantic compactness is off, the scope and splitting controls remain visible but disabled. Processing stays combined when the selected resources fit, then separates or splits them only when necessary.

Starting a Run

Check the active settings, start a Run, and understand its completion notice.

Press Run to process the selected resources using the configuration currently shown in Focus and Run tuning.

Before starting

Select at least one resource and review the configuration for the next run. If Run is unavailable, read the message below it or the tooltip on the disabled control.

While a run is active

The progress notice includes Cancel run while processing can still be stopped. During Saving results, cancellation is no longer available because the result is being finalized. Run tuning controls and manual editing remain unavailable until processing finishes.

When a run finishes

A changed result becomes Version 1 of the new Run. A successful run can leave the current result unchanged when it finds nothing useful to change.

If current selections already reach the requested range's upper limit, the run may not need to select anything new. This can happen with selections retained by Cumulative or manual selections preserved by Flexible. The completion notice explains what happened.

When a run fails, adjust the setting named in the notice before trying again. Size-related fixes are listed under Troubleshooting.

Flow View and Source View

Use the Flow view for contextual excerpts and the Source view to read complete source content with selections in place.

A Flow is the focused result created by a run. The Flow view and Source view present it in complementary ways.

Flow view

The Flow view presents the result as contextual excerpts. In Include mode, each excerpt centers a selected highlight. In Exclude mode, it shows retained text after exclusions are removed.

Press Open Source view on a selection to open its location in the complete source.

When Highlight scope or Exclusion scope is available, All shows every current highlight or exclusion. New only limits the Flow view to excerpts associated with the latest incremental additions and marks only those additions in the Source view. In Exclude results, earlier exclusions remain readable as plain context.

For Include results, Dim subdues the surrounding context and Highlight marks the selected text. For Exclude results, Dim subdues excluded text and Cover conceals it until you reveal it.

Open an existing selection's action menu to remove it. In Include mode, the same menu can also change its Surface Label. Add new highlights and exclusions from the Source view.

Source view

Choose a resource in the header to read its complete content with selections marked at their actual locations. Use Flow view and Source view in the header to switch between the two views; Source view reopens the selected resource. Use the arrow beside a selection to open the matching excerpt in the Flow view.

For PDFs, choose Text for extracted text or Overlay for the original page layout.

To add a highlight or exclusion, select text in the Source view and press Highlight or Exclude. For a PDF, selection works in both Text and Overlay.

Threads, Runs, and Versions

Navigate related Runs, manual Versions, and alternate lines of inquiry.

History is organized as Threads, Runs, and Versions.

Thread

A Thread is one continuing line of inquiry. It keeps one Focus type (Goal or Target) and one Selection mode (Include or Exclude) across its Runs. The Assistant conversation also follows the current Thread.

After a successful run, an unnamed Thread receives a short name based on its result and Focus. It may appear as New thread while the name is prepared, and a later run can try again if naming did not complete. You can rename it from the Thread row menu; a name you set is not replaced automatically. Clearing that name returns the Thread to New thread and allows a later run to name it again.

Deleting a Thread removes all of its Runs, Versions, and Assistant messages.

Run

A Run is one processing step. Turn on Continue this thread to add the next run to the current Thread. Use the horizontal arrows in the header to move between Runs.

Version

Version 1 is the result created by a Run. Adding, removing, or relabeling a selection creates another Version within that Run. Use Undo and Redo in the header to move between Versions.

Start another Thread

In the Threads panel, Start New Thread Here branches from the exact Version represented by that row. This is also how you switch between Goal and Target or between Include and Exclude.

Keep or discard a draft

Changing Focus or Run tuning prepares the configuration for the next run. If Unsaved draft changes appears as you move away, choose Pin to keep them, Discard to remove them, or Cancel to stay where you are.

Cumulative and Flexible Runs

Keep adding to the current result or let the next Run reconsider it.

Turn on Continue this thread, then Incremental mode, when the next run should work from the result you are viewing.

Incremental guidance appears under Focus while Incremental mode is on. Use it for a specific adjustment the run should consider while following the rest of the configuration for the next run. It is editable while Use previous highlights as context or Use previous exclusions as context is on, and it applies when the selected resources contain previous selections. Turning that setting off keeps the guidance for later.

While the field is editable, you can also ask the Assistant to update or clear Incremental guidance.

Cumulative

Choose Cumulative when every current highlight or exclusion must remain and the run should only add more.

With Manual Coverage, the target is the total after the run, not the amount to add. Current coverage is the minimum. If the requested range leaves no room above that minimum, the run keeps the current result and reports that no processing was needed.

Use previous highlights as context or Use previous exclusions as context helps the run avoid selecting the same material again. Current selections remain even when this setting is off.

Incremental guidance can steer what the run adds, but it cannot change the selections Cumulative keeps.

Flexible

Choose Flexible when selections from earlier Runs may be kept, replaced, or removed. A Manual target can be lower than current coverage because those earlier selections do not have to remain.

Use previous highlights as context or Use previous exclusions as context shows all previous selections to the model as a reference, including manual additions. It does not preserve them.

Incremental guidance can steer what the run keeps, omits, or adds during reselection.

Turn on Preserve manually added highlights or Preserve manually added exclusions to keep manual additions regardless of the run's selection. With Manual Coverage, those additions count toward the final total.

Editing highlights and Surface Labels

Add selections in the Source view, remove highlights or exclusions in either view, and relabel Include highlights.

Edit a saved result without starting another Run.

Add or remove a selection

To add a highlight or exclusion, select text in the Source view and press Highlight or Exclude. For a PDF, selection works in both Text and Overlay. New selections can only be added from the Source view.

In either the Flow view or the Source view, open an existing selection's action menu to remove it.

Each edit creates another Version within the current Run. Use Undo and Redo to move through those Versions.

Use Surface Labels

Surface Labels organize Include highlights by topic or purpose. Create labels under Focus, choose their colors, and check the labels that should be available for the next Include run.

Choose a label while adding a highlight in the Source view, or open an existing Include highlight's action menu in either view to relabel it. Relabeling creates another Version.

After a saved highlight uses a Surface Label, that label's name is locked. Its color can still be changed. Create a new label when you need a different name.

Relabeling an existing highlight does not enable that label for the next run. Choose Enable Label For Next Run from the highlight's action menu when you need both.

Surface Labels are not used in Exclude results.

Assistant

Ask project-specific questions, inspect or compare saved results, and refine Focus.

Use the Assistant to ask questions and adjust the work around your source material. The Flow and Source views remain where you read and verify the selected material.

Work with the current project

Ask a question that depends on the current project, request help refining Goal, Target, or Context, or discuss Surface Labels.

You can also ask how a control or workflow works. The answer can link to the relevant part of this manual.

Understand a saved result

Name the Run or Version you mean. Ask for a high-level view when you want the main themes, relationship to the Focus, selection counts, or what was new or carried forward. Ask for close inspection when the answer depends on the exact highlighted or retained text, such as incomplete fragments, repetition, weak selection boundaries, Surface Label assignments, or whether a specific point appears.

For example:

  • “Give me a high-level overview of Run 3.”
  • “At a high level, how well does Run 3 serve my Goal?”
  • “Inspect Run 3 closely for incomplete or repetitive selections.”
  • “Does Run 3 Version 2 contain material about the role of international institutions?”

Compare saved results

Name the Runs or Versions you want compared and describe the depth you need. A high-level comparison is useful for themes, Focus alignment, counts, and broad differences. Close inspection is useful when the judgment should account for the exact highlighted or retained material.

For example:

  • “Give me a high-level comparison of Runs 2 and 3.”
  • “Inspect Runs 2 and 3 closely and tell me which better serves my Goal.”
  • “Compare the exact Surface Label assignments in Run 2 and Run 3.”
  • “Summarize the differences across these Runs, then tell me which two need close comparison.”

Close inspection can use more Assistant quota. If the complete saved results are unusually large, the Assistant may ask for confirmation before continuing.

Request an update

Say explicitly what you want changed. Discussing a Focus does not change it by itself.

When Require approval for assistant updates is on, review the proposed changes and press Apply. When it is off, requested updates are applied immediately and recorded in the conversation.

The Assistant can update the active Goal or Target, Context, Incremental guidance while the field is editable, and Surface Labels. Switching between Goal and Target requires a new Thread.

The conversation follows the current Thread. Open another Thread to return to its Assistant history.

Settings

Set Run, Assistant, and interface preferences.

Run settings

Set the default Semantic compactness, processing scope, and oversized-resource splitting choices used in Run tuning.

Assistant settings

Turn on Require approval for assistant updates to review requested Focus or Surface Label changes before they are applied. Turn it off to apply those requested changes immediately.

UI settings

Flow context sets how much surrounding text appears around each snippet in the Flow view. Animate Run and Version numbers controls the number transitions shown while navigating history.

Settings save automatically. If a save fails, press Retry save.

Model availability

When Model and Reasoning controls are offered, they list models offered by the service; some choices require Pro. If your saved model is unavailable, the controls show the available model that will be used instead. Viewing that fallback or changing an unrelated setting does not overwrite your saved model; deliberately changing Model or Reasoning saves your new selection. Models used in past activity remain identified in history.

Troubleshooting

Resolve common problems with resources, Coverage, Runs, and views.

A resource will not upload

Use a .txt, .pdf, .html, .htm, or .md file. If a file is too large, the upload message shows the current limit. For a web page, enter a public http or https address. Follow any wait time shown before retrying.

An uploaded resource cannot be selected

Read the resource tooltip or nearby notice for the specific reason.

An action reports not enough AI usage

The action requires more usage than is currently available. This can happen with a positive remaining percentage, or while other work temporarily reserves usage. Read the inline explanation and use View usage when offered. Waiting may release unused reservations but does not guarantee that the action will fit. Your input remains available for a deliberate retry. See Plans and Usage.

Coverage is disabled or has no current marker

Wait for the selected resources to finish preparing. If a retry action appears below Run, press it. Cumulative Manual Coverage remains unavailable until the current percentage can be calculated.

Unified is too large

Choose Per resource and start the run again. If one resource is still too large, also turn on Allow splitting oversized resources.

Per resource is still too large

Turn on Allow splitting oversized resources. If it is already on, select fewer or smaller resources before trying again.

A run finished without a new result

Read the completion notice. In Cumulative, current selections may already reach the requested upper limit. In Flexible, preserved manual selections may already reach it. A run can also find no useful change.

Flow view or Source view looks empty

Confirm that a Run result is open. If New only is available, switch to All to check for earlier selections. In the Source view, choose the intended resource from the header. For a PDF, switch between Text and Overlay.

The draft dialog keeps appearing

When Unsaved draft changes appears, choose Pin to keep the changes, Discard to remove them, or Cancel to stay where you are.
